BREAKING: Former Victoria Falls Mayor arrested over ivory possession

Former Victoria Falls mayor, Sifiso Mpofu, has been arrested for illegal possession of raw ivory 7 tusks weighing 58kgs and 4 ivory tusks weighing 28kgs.

Zimbabwe National Parks Public Relations Manager, Mr. Tinashe Farawo confirmed the arrest.

Two men have also been arrested for involvement in the ring.

According to the International Union for the conservation of Nature (IUCN), a global environment body, says that the population of elephants has dwindled to less than 415,000, a decline of 110,00 over the last 10 years as a result of poaching.

Poaching is believed to be fueled by the demand from China and East Asia, where ivory is used to make ornaments and jewelry also believed to have aphrodisiac elements

Last month Tanzania sentenced a Chinese businesswoman Yang Fenglan nicknamed “Ivory Queen” to 15 years in prison for illicit trade of hundreds of elephant tusks.
