- Brief background of Mokoomba;
Mokoomba is a top touring music band from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. (Victoria Falls is world famous for the mighty waterfall which is also called Mosi-oa-Tunya in the local Tonga language.) The band is made up of six members namely Mathias Muzaza, Trustworth Samende, Donald Moyo, Miti Mugande, Ndaba Coster Moyo and Abundance Mutori. We all grew up in the same township called Chinotimba and our music career started very early as we would always play music together after school and for other bands. In 2007, we decided to go professional and in 2008 won the Music Crossroads inter-regional festival competition, the prize of which enabled us to record our first album and to kick-start touring internationally.
- Best place visited;
Coming from Victoria Falls, we are proud to have one of the world’s top natural wonders in our backyard but we also enjoy traveling and seeing other wonders. One such experience was going to Russia in 2012, to a place called Ulan Ude near Lake Baikal. It was very beautiful and the people were very happy with our concert and to see and meet us.
- Whats the best shows played outside Zimbabwe and Best performances outside;
We have had many great performances and experiences thus far. To give just a few highlights, we really enjoyed sharing the stage with Senegalese music star Baba Maal at the Harare International Festival of Arts in 2013, playing at the Apollo Theatre in New York in 2016 and at big festivals like Roskilde (Denmark), Sziget Festival (Hungary), WOMAD (UK) to name a few.
- What is the secret to Mokoomba brand success?
There is no secret as such, we are just always striving to stay original and to work very hard. We have a long way to go and we have been fortunate to get some recognition and a growing local and international audience.
- Culture and Heritage – does that play part in Mokoomba’s music/objectives?
Culture and heritage plays a central role in our music. The music is very much inspired by our traditional music, knowledge and languages like Luvale, Tonga, Ndebele and Nyanja which we then blend with other music styles like Soukous, Ska and AfroLatin beats to create our own brand of music. We feel that by rooting our music in our culture and heritage, we are helping in our own small way to preserve and promote the best of our culture and heritage.
- What do we expect this festive season?
We have had a very busy year in 2017, playing more than 80 concerts at home and abroad. We also launched our new album titled LUYANDO which has been well received. We took a break during the festive season and resumed our local and international concert schedule in January 2018.
- Awards and honors received
Mokoomba has received numerous awards which include the Songlines Music Awards – Best Newcomer 2013, National Arts Merit Awards 2013, Zim Achievers Awards UK 2013, Zimbabwe Music Awards 2014 and the Bulawayo Arts Awards 2016.
